CSA Newsletter Week 9/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 9/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

For the past few years, our farmer, Kale, has graciously taken the time to write the weekly newsletter for our CSA members. I wanted to take a moment to thank Kale for writing such an eloquent newsletter each week that provided a perfect glimpse into life at Mountain Bounty Farm. Kale is an absolute rockstar on the farm and a true gift as a human. We will miss working with her every day as she transitions to working primarily with Little Boy Flowers this season.

To those new and old to the CSA, I wanted to introduce myself. This will be my fifth season as a farmer at Mountain Bounty Farm and my third year as the CSA manager. I split my time between days working in the fields and office days where I answer calls and emails from our CSA members and try to make your CSA journey as smooth as possible! If you do ever have any questions or comments about your CSA subscription, you can email me at Info@mountainbountyfarm.com or call (530)292-3776. Outside of farming, I'm an avid reader, proud dog mom, hobby potter, and founding member of the Mountain Bounty Kayak Club.

This week, we began two big projects, planting potatoes and putting up our season extension growing tunnels, often called our "caterpillar tunnels." The main challenge of these tunnels is wrangling a 280 ft by 50 ft piece of plastic on top of the tunnels and trying not to let it blow away in the wind. Wish us luck! I post a bit of the work we do here on our Instagram page, if you'd like to follow along on our visual story.

I hope you enjoy your boxes this week,

Grace Debbeler

CSA Newsletter Week 8/52 (2/23 & 2/24)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 8/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

I come to you this week with the bittersweet announcement that this will be my last newsletter!  I’ll be spending most of my days this coming season growing flowers instead of vegetables, so from here on out you’ll be in Grace’s very capable hands.

For the past four years, I’ve sat down almost every week and wondered what I could possibly say to all of you about the work that we do. To share the extent of our experience as farmers has always felt like a tall order. Mostly, I’ve noticed, it comes out small. That no matter how many onions you’ve harvested, the first onion of the year feels so special that it might as well be the first onion of all time. That a summer day can feel like an entire lifetime until you turn around and do it all over again. That on some days, the air feels golden, and the angle of the sun is just right, and you tilt your face to the sky as the sandhill cranes fly over and feel so lucky just to be in this world.

Every week, our boxes go out and I think of the hands, your hands, that lift and open them. Hands that grab vegetables and stuff them into fridges and onto kitchen counters, that twist off radish greens and wash and chop and peel and pinch.  We are all so inextricably linked to this planet and to each other. A tiny blue speck that just keeps on spinning. Thank you, as always, for the outpouring of love and support you offer to this farm and to all of us. You make everything we do worth it many times over. It’s been such an honor to be the bridge between our worlds, and I’ll miss it! Here’s hoping that this week, and every week, finds you with full hearts and full bellies. Happy eating!

CSA Newsletter Week 7/52 (2/16 & 2/17)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 7/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This past week we irrigated our garlic crop. This is a frightening thing to do in early February with our reservoirs not yet full, no significant precipitation in the forecast, and no rain since the snowpocalypse. Our garlic, which was planted as cloves in October and saved as seed garlic from the previous year's crop, sits alongside our strawberry beds for nine long months as it transitions from clove to bulb for harvest in June. Garlic needs a certain number of "chilling hours" called vernalization, to trigger the development of a bulb in the spring. While it may feel like June with these warm, breezy days, we're thinking like garlic and staying calm and contemplative for the next few months.

As we hurtle towards spring and a bright new season, we hope you take a moment to enjoy these chilling hours, just like the garlic. Enjoy your boxes this week.

CSA Newsletter Week 6/52 (2/9 & 2/10)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 6/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Over the last week or so, our late winter days have at long last stretched just beyond 10 hours. This bright moment of sunlight returned marks the cusp of spring, and the end of what is sometimes called the ‘persephone period’. In Greek mythology, Persephone, goddess of spring, was tricked and taken into the underworld by Hades. Her mother Demeter, goddess of the harvest, could do nothing but weep over the loss of her daughter - in the midst of her grief, all ceased to grow. And so, with the seasons held at bay and famine descending, a compromise was reached; Persephone would spend most of her year above ground, with a brief winter return to her role as queen of the underworld. Every year she emerges, and spring follows closely behind!

In winter, when the day length drops below 10 hours, plant growth slows to a crawl. Out in the fields, you can see the change come over our greens, which produce the tiniest of leaves, and then none at all. Seedlings started during this time grow much more slowly than they do during the long days close to the summer solstice, something that we must always account for in our planting schedule. It’s incredible how those short winter days can sometimes feel like the longest of all.

No matter, because short winter days are finally at an end. And with the last of this year’s persephone period behind us, we’re setting darkness aside and watching the world around us pick up speed. Hold onto your hats folks!

CSA Newsletter Week 4/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 4/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

January aside, this sunny window has had the farm bustling and full of energy. Each week we cross our fingers and hope for rain, simultaneously grasping at this glorious chance to prepare for the season ahead. Seeds to start, projects to finish, fields to mow, and hopefully enough time to do it all! It’s winter’s game - run while the sun’s still out.

Your boxes this week come to you loaded with the usual winter greens and root vegetables, along with a couple of extra-special treats! Romanesco (the lime green, fractallated type thing you’ll see in your box) is a winter favorite, with a rich, nutty flavor that lands somewhere on the spectrum between broccoli and cauliflower. It tastes incredible with parmesan and butter, tossed with crispy breadcrumbs or toasted nuts, roasted with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon - if you know, you know.

We’re wishing you all a fantastic week of sun and full bellies! Whenever rain decides to come, we’ll most definitely be ready for it.

CSA Newsletter Week 3/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 3/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Many years ago, I worked as a nanny for a family that participated enthusiastically in a local CSA. Each week, I’d un-box their vegetables for them and place them in the fridge, proud (I was also farming at the time) that these folks were such avid vegetable eaters. This is where the spaghetti squash entered my life, one dreary week in mid-winter. There it was at the bottom of the box, a 3 lb golden egg with a woody stem that peered directly into my soul. I felt that, in theory, I loved spaghetti squash-or at least that I must uphold a pastoral responsibility to the seasonal diet it had come to represent. I gently lifted it out, and lovingly placed it on the counter, beside the fruit bowl.

It stayed there for an entire year.

A lot can happen in a year, but during this particular year, eating spaghetti squash was not one of those things. I became familiar with the sight of the spaghetti squash, a landmark, a sentinel, constant reminder of an ever prolonged sense of failure. I understood, when the spaghetti squash was eventually offered to me, just how grateful the family would be for someone else to shoulder this burden. So I took it home, fully intending to eat it and finally complete its destiny. I placed it out of the way, on a dark shelf in the pantry.

It stayed there for a year.

I’ll confess that in the end, I composted the spaghetti squash. It was the right thing to do. The cautionary tale I will now make explicit; don’t let this happen to your spaghetti squash. It’s unique, and delicious, and easier to deal with than you might think. Use a sharp knife to carefully cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, and bake it. It won’t take long at all (more details on that here), and you can even microwave it if you want! The reward is a delicious meal, and, if you’re like me, the satisfying feeling of a destiny finally fulfilled. Good luck!

CSA Newsletter Week 2/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 2/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week, we’ll tuck our first round of seeds into the soil and watch the dream of a new season roll slowly out in front of us. This is where it all starts! These tiny seedlings and the thousands that follow represent an abundance of food - sustenance from the humblest of beginnings. This moment also marks the maiden voyage of our shiny new greenhouse, which Jake and Cory have been slowly and steadily working to build over the past year. The new space, located at our Birchville farm site, holds three times the capacity of our old off-site greenhouse, and will provide a  warmer, sunnier, safe haven for winter seedlings. It’s a big step up for the farm, and one of many improvements that has come with land security through the Forever Farms program and our lease with the Bear Yuba Land Trust. We are thrilled!

Enjoy your boxes this week, along with the amazing string of sunny days.

CSA Newsletter Week 50/52 (FINAL delivery of 2021)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 50/52 of 2021

This is our FINAL delivery of 2021! We are on Farm Vacation from December 18th- January 2nd, 2022. We do not deliver on December 22/23 or December 29/30. We're watching the weather and will let you know if the storms have any impact on our delivery for Wednesday or Thursday.

Dear Farm Members,

It’s hard to believe that we’ll be packing the last CSA boxes of 2021 this week! What a wild year it’s been- full of challenges, but also replete with the many successes and small triumphs that keep us all coming back for more. So much to contemplate and to celebrate, and as always, a whole host of things to be grateful for! It’s a wild and exciting time to be farming, where we all must constantly test our skills and find ways to move forward amidst this rapidly changing world.

Over the next two weeks, our crew will benefit from some much needed rest and reflection. Winter’s substantially slower pace offers a fantastic opportunity to refuel before we jump right back into a new year and new season. There’s so much to look forward to, and we’re so happy to have you all along for the ride! We’d like to thank you all, as always, for your continued support of our small but mighty farm as we work to grow and feed this community. Have the happiest of seasons, and we’ll see you in the new year!

CSA Newsletter Week 49/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 49/52 of 2021

Mark your calendars! We are on Farm Vacation from December 18th- January 2nd, 2022. We do not deliver on December 22/23 or December 29/30.

Dear Farm Members,

It’s exciting to see some rain in the forecast this week! Despite October’s unprecedented rainfall, the warm, dry weather we’ve been having has had a lot of us farmers raising our eyebrows. Living with climate change means anything goes these days - unpredictable weather patterns with an all-or-nothing undertone means we cross our fingers early and often. We rely on the rain we receive during winter months to irrigate throughout the entirety of the ‘dry’ season, which seems to get longer every year (although this year we did get lucky). It’s a relief to know that precipitation is on the way, here to fill up our figurative buckets!

May this week find you all keeping cozy with full bellies, family, and friends amidst some wonderfully stormy weather.

CSA Newsletter Week 48/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 48/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

After a restful long weekend, our small-but-mighty winter crew will be back in the fields this week to harvest, pack boxes, and to dig our many beds of fall/winter carrots for long-term storage. As winter approaches, each cold spell works a kind of magic, triggering these carrots to convert starches to sugar and making them ever-sweeter. We harvest en masse, storing them in our coolers caked in a protective layer of dirt that locks moisture in and keeps them crunchy. We’ll keep them squirreled away for the season, washing as needed to fill your boxes. If you’ve ever wondered what the secret is to perfect carrots, there you go - water, sun, luck, and cold days and nights! Enjoy your boxes this week and this incredible weather we’ve been having.

Mark your calendars! We take a Farm Vacation from December 18th - January 2nd, 2022 and do not deliver during those weeks.

CSA Newsletter Week 47/52 - Wednesday Delivery for all!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 47/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

This week, we give thanks for bitter greens! Radicchio, Escarole, Sugarloaf, Frisee, Endive - all members of the chicory family, shining underdogs of the vegetable world. We seed them in late summer and transplant in August, allowing them to mature and sweeten in the brisk days and frosty mornings of late fall and winter. Cold temperatures dull their bitter edge without adulterating it, the infamous bite that makes these seasonal greens so unique and so loved!

Although many are intimidated by the bitterness, it’s a secret weapon to be harnessed, perfect for pairing with all things sweet, citrusy, and sour, ready to cut through the dense, starchy flavor profiles of traditional holiday food. Use it wisely! I love our radicchio in place of the romaine in a caesar salad, where it matches perfectly with the bold saltiness of parmesan and anchovy. It’s like lettuce, but better, as we say.

As many of you sit down to feast with family and friends over the next few weeks, my greatest wish is that these bitter gems find a place at the table. Use them and cherish them- they’re a seasonal treat and grown to be loved!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 46/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

It’s hard to believe that we’ve arrived at the last week of our ‘main’ season here on the farm. For 33 weeks, April through November, we are constantly at work balancing a flurry of seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, and everything in between. Farming is a complex dance, each season entirely different from the last in ways you could never have anticipated. It takes the combined efforts of many - farmer hands, hearts, and minds - generous neighbors, patient friends, fellow farmers, family, an entire village, really.

It’s hard to pour enough gratitude into something so small as a newsletter, but I’m doing my best to make this paragraph overflow with it! So if you’re reading this, thank you - for your support, your time, your energy. Thank you to our incredible crew of hard working, talented folks, who we’d most certainly be lost without. Together we’ve managed to do the necessary work of turning soil into gold, a constant experiment in the art of resilience.

Happy end of season everyone! May this week find you with full hearts and full bellies.

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 45/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

November marks the beginning of Nisenan Heritage month, as well as Native American Heritage month in California. This is a great time to take a moment to learn about the Nisenan Rancheria and their constant work towards regaining federal recognition, as well as to fully appreciate their long history in this place.

The Nisenan have inhabited and stewarded this region of foothills and river canyons for thousands of years, and represent a powerful voice within our community. We contribute to their Ancestral Homelands Reciprocity Program and suggest that folks local to Western Nevada County consider doing so as well! Mountain Bounty operates entirely on unceded Nisenan Land - every item in your boxes, any produce that you purchase from us at Briar Patch or at Farmers market, is as much a result of their work to care for this land as it is ours. An incredible cause to support, and every little bit helps. To learn more, or to donate, check out their website at Nisenan.org. Enjoy your boxes this week!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 44/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

This week we tucked a few thousand strawberry crowns into the ground, crossed our fingers, and began the long wait for next year’s berries. On Tuesday, we’ll finish filling out our garlic patch with a similar sentiment - already walking in the shadow of a new year.

Much of what we do these days involves putting fields to rest and storing crops, tools, etc. for the winter. As a result, it’s a welcome change of pace to think forward, planting seeds for a future that, perennially, offers up opportunities for success and failure, luck and loss, the chance to try and try again. The funny thing about farming is you really only get to do it once a year. But with each passing season the odds are tilted ever more progressively in our favor, and our hopes are ever high. Onward!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 43/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

With the massive amount of rain we received over the past few days, the farm’s looking a whole lot wetter, and we couldn’t be happier about it! For the past month or so we’ve been fervently seeding cover crop, an important part of protecting our soil from eroding over the rainy season. It’s all part of the process of putting our fields to rest for the winter, and, for the most part, timing is the name of the game. For the past few years it’s been an immense effort for us to get our cover crop in on time - with no rain in sight, we’ve had to run irrigation to prepare the fields, seed them, and then irrigate again (sometimes multiple times!). It’s been a huge effort, and stressful, especially at a time of year when we’re usually trying our best to conserve every drop of water we can. This year felt like winning the lottery, with free water from the sky as our grand prize. And despite all of the mud and chaos of rainy workdays, out in the fields our fall/winter vegetables are really shining - beautiful cabbage, radicchio, and heads of broccoli that might as well be emeralds, as far as we’re concerned. Many of these gems will be making their way into your boxes this week - cherish them, and enjoy!

Kale

P.S. Mark your calendars! Our delivery day (in Western Nevada County ONLY) changes to WEDNESDAY starting Wednesday, November 10th for both Vegetable and Winter Fruit Shares.

There's been a chill in the air these past few nights that, at some points this summer, felt like it would never come. But here we are again, back to mornings marked by cold fingers and be-sweatered farmers, with days still warm and sunny enough to peel back all those flannel layers and feel the sun on your skin. Soon, we’ll be planting garlic and pulling frost-sweetened carrots from the ground, and making big plans for next year, and some much deserved winters’ rest. Enjoy your veggies this week!

CSA Newsletter Week 40/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 40/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

On Friday, we gathered beneath the ancient oak that still stands at the center of the farm and took a moment to celebrate the miracle of land security. The Bear Yuba Land Trust closed on our Birchville Road farm site just over a year ago, and despite all that’s happened since then - planning, cleaning, moving, and building new infrastructure - it still feels a little bit like a dream.

It’s been a long, arduous journey to get to this point, and now, after decades of effort on behalf of John and Angie and all of our farmers, lots of work in collaboration with multiple different organizations, and extensive support and contributions from this community, we can finally breathe a little bit easier. What has been achieved is monumental in that it not only protects our ability to continue farming on and caring for this land, but protects this land ‘in perpetuity’ as agricultural space - never to be split up, developed, or sold.

We are so grateful for everyone who has been a part of making this dream a reality, for the Nisenan who loved and stewarded this land long before it was taken from them, and for those who work to protect the fate of this earth and all of its creatures. Thank you! May we all gather the strength and courage to hold fast to our farmland, wild places, and wide open spaces, regardless of what tomorrow may bring.
