MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 45/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week we harvested over 9,000 radishes so that children all over Nevada County will have the opportunity to try a Red Rover Radish as part of the Harvest of the Month program with Sierra Harvest. This program brings fresh, local, organic produce to all the children in Western Nevada County schools once a month for the kids to try. We love having this opportunity to introduce kids to new and interesting produce. While fennel a few seasons back wasn't a big hit, we're hoping they love the spicy radishes!

You won't find radishes in your share this week (they went to all the kids!) but you will find a lot of other goodies that are ready to be roasted up on these chilly, rainy days.

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 44/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

It’s been awhile since I’ve written the farm newsletter – thank you Kale and Grace for taking up the torch! I wanted to step back in briefly to share some thoughts on the state of the farm and news about possible new directions.

First, a reminder: This coming November 5th, we’ll be hosting a special gathering to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Please come join us. (Buy tickets here!) We will be spit roasting a whole pig from our friends at AM Ranch. The meal will be catered by our neighbors, the wonderful cooks at Purdon Studios. There will be vegetarian and vegan options. Also: live music, square dancing in the barn, games and crafts. I’m especially excited for square dancing, which I have no idea how to do but have been told it's beginner friendly and very fun!

Since its humble beginnings in 1997, farming on ¾ acre generously shared by old family friends, Mountain Bounty has grown into a farming powerhouse and community fixture. We’ve grown a lot of incredible produce, and even more importantly we’ve cultivated a crop of highly skilled farmers. Mountain Bounty is now run by a team of 4 senior farm managers with 10 or more years of experience farming here and elsewhere, with myself as occasional advisor and mother hen. We also have a crew of 15 farmers each season which are instrumental to our success and we rely on every day. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. The farm is constantly innovating and working to stay at the cutting edge of our craft, humming along producing consistently for 800 families, resilient to the many challenges we’ve faced, and ready for what comes.

After all these years, I’m now interested in more fully handing over the reins, selling the farm business, and moving on to new adventures. I’ve had a good long run. I started farming in the mid 90’s when I was in my 20’s, I’m now in my 50’s and ready for the next chapter. That’s both exciting and scary, mostly scary. Also, I think the farm could benefit from some fresh eyes, and new and different skills. I remain committed to the farm’s future success, and will stay involved as long as necessary to make sure your produce will keep on coming!

The ideal candidate(s) will be an individual or organization with farming or food experience, proven leadership skills, including the ability to manage and inspire a team, and a healthy dose of entrepreneurial spirit. I will remain as an advisor for whoever takes the helm as much as they want. Please spread the word, and get in touch if you would like more info. As this process unfolds I will share updates with our farm community.

With endless gratitude for all the years of support,

John Tecklin

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 43/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

For the past month or so, the chorus from our field managers (Cory and Jake) has been about fervently seeding cover crop. Cover cropping is an important part of protecting our soil from eroding over the rainy season and part of putting our fields to rest for the winter. Since that rainy season hasn't started yet, we'll be running irrigation to prepare the fields, seeding the cover crop and irrigating again to get a good germination and coverage from the cover crop. We'll also be here, patiently waiting for the rain in the long term forecast to materialize.

Many fall gems are making their way into the shares this week, including long awaited celery and napa cabbage. We hope you enjoy!

Week 42/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

We're having a party! We're celebrating 25 years of farming in the foothills with an epic Harvest Festival and pig roast feast on Saturday, November 5th. As CSA members and an integral part of our community, we'd love to celebrate with you.

John Tecklin started Mountain Bounty Farm in 1997 and we're so proud of the farm we've grown to become after 25 years. Farming has its challenges, and this year was no exception. Fires, smoke, heat, crop disease and pests were all navigated this season by our incredibly hard working farmers. And now we've made it to the end of our season and we're definitely ready to celebrate. After a few years of not being able to meet in person with our community, we are so excited to host this event. We've put together an evening of farm fun for all ages including lawn games, crafts, live music with square dancing, and of course, delicious farm fresh food catered by our friends at Purdon Studios.

You can buy tickets beforehand via our website (https://mountainbountyfarm.com/shop) or at the event. Look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Farm Members,

In honor of Indigenous Peoples day this week, we want to express our deep gratitude for the Nisenan People who have inhabited and stewarded this region of foothills and river canyons for thousands of years, and represent a powerful voice within our community. Mountain Bounty operates entirely on unceded Nisenan Land - every item in your boxes, any produce that you purchase from us at Briar Patch or at Farmers market, is as much a result of their work to care for this land as it is ours. The land that we work on is integral to this organization and we contribute to their Ancestral Homelands Reciprocity Program and suggest that folks local to Western Nevada County consider doing so as well! An incredible cause to support, and every little bit helps. To learn more, or to donate, check out their website at Nisenan.org.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Week 40/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week at the farm brings perfect fall weather and an abundance of fall crops. This time of year is always a precious reminder of how lucky we are to spend our days outside. While picking tomatoes on Monday, we were encircled by dragonflies overhead, an orchestra of bees on the basil flowers, and the gentle squeaks of sandhill cranes far above in the clear blue skies. We’re excited for the opportunity to share all this goodness with you, and hope you’re enjoying the clear air and fall weather as much as we are.

Enjoy your shares this week,

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 39/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Tales of a First Year Farmer

Oh to be a first year farmer at Mountain Bounty Farm! There are a handful of us here at Mountain Bounty who have just taken their first steps into the world of produce production, jettisoned from our boring non-farmer lives into the wonderful realm of dirt and veggies. And what a fun place it is! Coming into the season I didn't know what the heck a kohlrabi was. Is kohlrabi even real? Is that a word? Turns out they are real, and delicious. In our short time here we have learned so much from the lovely crew and now take pride in being able to call ourselves true dirt ridden, straw hat wearin', veggie corallers. Our backgrounds may be varied, but we can all agree that having the chance to work the earth and be a part of a sustainable food system is an experience that is more than amazing. We are all grateful to be a part of this community and to learn the joys of pulling a big, fat, meaty, juicy, beefalicious beet out from the ground, knowing that it will end up on somebody's dinner plate.

Various tales of a First Year Farmer:

-Chasing geese off the crops

-Doing donuts in a tractor

-Fixing said tractor after doing said donuts

-Feeding the neighbor's goats some yummy carrots

-Playing in big 'ol puddles after the first fall rain

-Crop transplant racing

-Avoiding the farm's beehive full of angry angry bees

-Having a wardrobe that is usually tinted brown with earthy dirt tones

-Relocating gophers

-Frolicking hand in hand in the fields

-Filling up on the best produce around!

Enjoy your shares this week,

Farmer Jack

  • Warren Pears (classic European texture — soft and juicy with a melting mouth feel. The Warren pear is sweet to taste and avoids the typical grittiness found in most other pear varieties.)

  • Emerald Beaut Plums (A freestone plum, the Emerald Beaut is a delicate green that turns golden with a hint of a blush. It has a firmer texture than the Santa Rosa with a crisp almost crunchy mouthfeel. One of our most hardy fruits, the Emerald Beaut just gets sweeter and sweeter without losing texture as it ages.) OR Flavor Treat Pluots (They're reddish-purple over tender, yellow flesh that's extremely juicy. One of our last stone-fruits of the season, the Flavor Treat, is a welcome reminder of the height of summer.)

  • Gala Apples (Sweet, fragrant, and very juicy, Gala apples are one of our favorites to eat out of hand..)

  • Reed avocados (Reed avocados are larger, rounder, and creamier than the popular Hass variety. They're widely known for their creamy smooth texture and buttery flesh.)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 38/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Rain in the foothills! What a joy to see some moisture reach our parched hills. This Thursday, we'll celebrate the fall equinox - one of the two moments each year when the sun sits directly above the equator, giving us a day and night that are approximately equal. It seems only natural that this shift is met with rain and some chilly nights. While there are several more months of farming ahead of us, we'll see a noticeable change in the pace of things at the farm. We'll be spending our days cleaning up the chaos of summer, turning over beds for the last of the fall plantings, seeding cover crops, and harvesting at every chance we get. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to slow down and notice the shift in seasons.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

CSA Newsletter Week 37/52 (September 13/15)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 37/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Each Thursday afternoon, our crew gathers in a stifling hot office and formulates our plan of action for the following week. We prioritize tasks based on how urgent they are, coordinate weeding with watering and transplanting, we make time to seed our new crops in the greenhouse while also managing our crops in the ground. We talk about pests and diseases and how best we can manage them. We try to find space for every single crop we want to grow and are always amazed that we can somehow find more room. We also spend three days a week harvesting and packing for our CSA, wholesale accounts like Briarpatch Co-op and our favorite restaurants, and harvesting for the Nevada City Farmers Market. Needless to say, our schedule is packed and it's a delicate and well rehearsed orchestra performance that we achieve each week.

We then switch gears and talk about what we want to harvest and put in the CSA box for the following week. We have a rough "box formula" that we like to adhere to (root vegetable, alium, bunched green, lettuce and herb plus other speciality items as seasonally available in each box.) With that in mind, we discuss what's ready to harvest, what you got in your box last week, the different items we want to put in small vs. regular, what the total value of the box is, what meals you could potentially make with all the items, etc. This is a fun and collaborative process that really makes the box feel like something special. Once we decide on contents, we put them on our website for those of you who meal prep and like to know what to expect.

All this to say, farming is a real labor or love (done in 100 degree heat and smoke filled skies) but we do it because we love it and because we love sharing these wonderful things we grow with you. We hope you can feel the love each week when you pick up your CSA shares.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

RECIPES

Our big item this week is potatoes which we harvested in August and now slowly give out until the end of the year. Because we're also giving leeks in the regular box, I'd suggest a Potato and Leek soup, thankfully it's cooled down a bit since last week. I'm not a soup person so I'm thinking I will make a Potato and Leek Gratin. Maybe brown butter sage gnocchi is more your style (I promise gnocchi is not as intimidating as it seems.) If you aren't sure what to do with your sage bundle from the week, here's some tips on how to dry it and use it throughout the fall. You'll want some when we give out butternut squash! I also saw this video on the internet a few weeks ago and I've been excited to try Miso Glazed Leeks.

Collards aren't as popular as their cousin Kale, but I promise they are just as good. I'm excited to try this Crispy Chickpea Stew or stick to the classics and cook with ham hock and bacon. You may notice a hole or two in your collard leaves this week. You can thank the cabbage moths for testing some of the leaves.

This may be our last week for basil, so don't forget to make a batch a pesto. You can always freeze any extra pesto (pro-tip: freeze in ice cube trays) and then you'll have easy portions to add to dishes throughout the fall.

Finally, our shade cloth on our red pepper patch this year has produced an astounding amount of red peppers without sun damage. I'd highly suggest making Romesco Sauce, which does require roasting or grilling your peppers but you're going to want to put this sauce on everything. I'd also recommend making a Shashuka on a slow Sunday morning with fresh tomatoes and red peppers.

  • Autumn Flame Peaches (Autumn Flame brings the peach harvest to a close with a truly nostalgic peach sweetness. The Autumn Flame is naturally more firm but softens beautifully if aged properly on the kitchen counter. It becomes almost as meltingly soft as a Gold Dust if left to enjoy until the skin begins to wrinkle slightly.)

  • Emerald Beaut Plums (A freestone plum, the Emerald Beaut is a delicate green that turns golden with a hint of a blush. It has a firmer texture than the Santa Rosa with a crisp almost crunchy mouthfeel. One of our most hardy fruit, the Emerald Beaut just gets sweeter and sweeter without losing texture as it ages.)

  • Flavor Fall Pluots (This late-season pluot variety brings our stone fruit season to a close. These pluots are dark-skinned with a golden colored, firm, juicy flesh, with a very mild aroma, complementing an appealing, balanced sweet and tart flavor.)

  • Hosui Asian Pears (The Hosui is popular in both Japan and in California. Hosuis have a rougher, thicker skin than the other Asian pear varieties we grow. They have a flesh that while still crunchy has a more melting mouthful, making the texture combination when eaten out of hand spectacular. Very sweet with a mild pear taste, their round shape and beautiful golden hue make them ideal for presentation with a distinctively Autumnal feel. )

  • Reed avocados (Reed avocados are larger, rounder, and creamier than the popular Hass variety. They're widely known for their creamy smooth texture and buttery flesh.)

CSA Newsletter Week 36/52 (September 6th and 8th)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 36/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

As summer vacation season comes to a close, I want to give a quick FSA (Farm Service Announcement) about how our vacation holds work. We offer unlimited vacation holds, for all shares, and you can easily place your share on hold from your Member Dashboard. The hold deadline is Friday at 11pm for changes to delivery for the following week. You do not pay for the weeks your share is on hold!

Vegetable Shares (Year-round): When you purchase a subscription, you prepay for either 25 or 4 deliveries. When you place your share on hold, you don't use one of your prepaid deliveries, so that delivery gets added to the end of your subscription. For example, if you pay for 4 weeks at a time, then place your share on hold for one week, your share will renew again in 5 weeks. You do not pay for weeks your share is on hold. You don't receive credit on your account for vacation holds on your vegetable share because you receive all prepaid deliveries before your share renews again.

Fruit and Flower Shares (Seasonal): If you pay in advance for the whole season, you receive credit on your account at the end of the season for any weeks you've placed your share on hold. If you pay for 4 weeks at a time, you don't use one of your prepaid deliveries the week your share is on hold and your share will renew again once you've received 4 deliveries.

The hold deadline is Friday at 11pm for changes to your share for the following week. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding vacation holds.

We'll be trying to stay cool this week and looking forward to cooler temps coming soon.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

Sweet and juicy with a tart, acidic bite, it is a nice contrast to the sweet Cal Red that precedes it. Summerset has a nice firm texture that holds up when frozen and it's among our favorite peaches to bake with.)

It has a firmer texture than the Santa Rosa with a crisp almost crunchy mouthfeel. One of our most hardy fruit, the Emerald Beaut just gets sweeter and sweeter without losing texture as it ages.)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 35/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week we celebrate the final corn harvest and with it, what feels like the end of the summer season. While a few summer crops will stick around as the days slow down, we'll soon say goodbye to melons and corn. Corn is one of our most space, nutrient, time, and water intensive crops so growing it for you all is a real labor or love and dedication to our love for sweet corn.

For those of you who don't know, an adorable song about corn has taken over the internet this week. It's rare that the viral video of the week can be referenced in this weekly newsletter and I'd like to leave you with the song's lyrics below. You can also watch the short video here.

“It’s corn, with a big lump with knobs.
It has juice. I can’t imagine a more beautiful thing.
It’s corn, I can tell you all about it.
I mean, look at this thing.
When I tried it with butter everything changed.”

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

  • Summerset Peaches (Bright yellow with hardly any blush to speak of, Summerset is a freestone peach with a distinct, bold flavor. Sweet and juicy with a tart, acidic bite, it is a nice contrast to the sweet Cal Red that precedes it. Summerset has a nice firm texture that holds up when frozen and it's among our favorite peaches to bake with.)

  • Perfect Peach Pie & How to freeze peaches
